【Matsumoto seminar group, Rikkyo University starts Kobo industry-academia partnership course】

The bell rang for the start of an industry-academia partnership course for 18 third-year students in the Matsumoto seminar group at Rikkyo University.
The students will be coming up with ideas for a year-end final presentation on the subject of “Creating a PR plan to promote the use of Kobo e-readers.”

The first day of the course included a lecture on the e-reader today, and they learned the pros and cons of e-readers and what kind of issues were to be addressed in the future. They enthusiastically asked questions and even came up with an idea: “How about displaying the device in a place like this.”
Most of them had not yet had any experience with e-readers.
Their interest was truly piqued at the end of the class when actual Kobo devices were handed out.
“It’s cute even when a girl holds it!” and “Lighter than I thought!” were some of the first impressions to spring forth. “I want to use it every day for my research!” was another eager reaction.
We look forward to plenty of zany and freewheeling ideas from these students. Happy studies until the end of the year!

【Students of Bologna University, Italy, visit Rakuten】

On August 22, eight Bologna University students visiting Japan from Italy came to Rakuten for a tour and orientation.
They study Japanese at university and have been experiencing Japanese culture such as ikebana and tea ceremony during their visit, but this was their first time to visit a Japanese company. The students showed deep interest in the facilities and equipment as well as the behavior of employees.
The orientation was also led by an Italian staff member who happens to be an alumni of Bologna University.
The Bologna University graduate, through his overview of Rakuten’s business operations and talking about his own job, communicated to the students the ups and downs of Japan and working at Rakuten as well as the source of his motivation.
The questions kept coming: “What is the top selling product?” “How is this different from other online commerce websites?”
There was a happy ending as the students left chanting one of the Rakuten Principles for Success – “Speed! Speed! Speed!”
We are happy that the group got to know more about Japanese companies and, through their fellow Bologna alumni, have gained a greater sense of their own potential.

【Students from all over Japan come to Rakuten HQ for the Female High School Student Information & Media Workshop 2013】

The Female High School Student Information & Media Workshop 2013 was held in late August for high school girls interested in sciences. The event was designed to inspire curiosity about the IT sector by offering a chance to visit large IT companies and to experience programming. Sixteen high school students interested in IT visited Rakuten from all around Japan.

After a tour of the company, a seminar about Rakuten was led by a female staff member with a humanities background working in technology at Rakuten. Later, the students split into groups to talk about the joys and difficulties of the workplace, motivation and other issues.

The Q&A session was lively with questions such as, “Did you study English at university?” and “How did you choose which university to go to?”
This session was reported on specifically in IT Pro.
Participants in the workshop went home with plenty of new ideas:
“It has filled me with courage to know that women are working in all departments.”
“I would love to be able to work with foreigners.”
“I thought that everyone would be working at their computers, but I was impressed to see everyone working so freely and happily!”
Please take a look at these hardworking high school students and women of Rakuten!

【Company visit by third year junior high school students of Yashio Gakuen】

Five third-year junior high school students from Yashio Gakuen in Shinagawa Ward near the Rakuten Towers HQ, paid us a visit.
The students were a little nervous upon arriving at headquarters, having the impression that everyone would be silently working at their computers and that the staff would all be very “cool.” On the tour, as they watched a meeting where employees engaged in a lively discussion and noticed the freestyle ways of working, their eyes grew wide with surprise and one exclaimed, “Working looks fun!”
In a briefing given by staff, the students learned about the Rakuten mission and important things to remember about work. It was certainly an opportunity for the students to think about the mindset they should have between now and the time they start their careers.
Rakuten will continue to deepen its exchange with the community through these kinds of activities under the concept of “Power to Japan!

【First all-English course held at Ritsumeikan Uji Junior and Senior High School – Kobo used here too】

A Rakuten IT School course was held for a second year high school International Baccalaureate (IB) class from Ritsumeikan Uji Junior and Senior High School in Kyoto on September 9 and September 14.
The course was held for students with the strong desire to “make their mark on the global stage” – all their school lessons apart from Japanese are given in English.
A foreign employee from Rakuten Group Canadian affiliate Kobo, Inc. was also engaged to teach the course fully in English.
When it came to the task of coming up with new Internet services, the students came up with highly practical ideas that would put any adult to shame, and the positivity and excitement shown by the students from start to finish was a great surprise for the lecturers.
A new initiative was tested with the introduction of kobo e-readers containing the course materials in the place of textbooks.
There was plenty of happy feedback. Many students hoped to set up their own businesses in the future and made comments such as, “I experienced the joy of creating a business.” and “It was a chance to think about how to capitalize on my English ability and the direction I should go in in the future.”
This group may well be the source of proud Japanese people who are active on the world stage. We look forward to that day!

Japan Debut! Creating a Future Ensemble: Children’s Orchestras

Rakuten is pleased to announce a campaign collecting stringed instruments as a part of our music education promotion initiative. Please donate your unused instrument!

On July 9 (Tuesday), 83 sixth graders from Sakura-ga-oka Elementary School in Souma, Fukushima Prefecture participating in the “Soma Children’s Chorus” gave a beautiful choral performance of “Furusato” (a popular song by the Japanese boy-band Arashi) during the opening ceremony of the Rakuten Golden Eagles vs. Nippon Ham Fighters baseball game at Tokyo Dome. “Furusato” (meaning ‘hometown’ in English) was chosen because the natural beauty and scenery described in the lyrics of resembles that of Souma, and hearing it sung by children with such faith and sincerity was moving to all who heard it.

Over two years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, but children affected by the disaster still face a very long road to recovery. In an effort to support and nurture these children Rakuten and El Sistema are preparing to launch the first of many children’s orchestras in Soma. We are now collecting donated stringed instruments to be given to participating children and ask for your support!

We are currently collecting donations of used orchestral stringed instruments violins, violas, cellos, and contrabass for 73 children. Members of Rakuten who would like to donate can apply through the ‘In Kind Donation’ page of Rakuten Auction. They will then receive a QR code and inquiry number, either of which they can use to print out a shipping label through the ‘Loppi’ system available at Lawson locations throughout Japan. If you know someone who may have children’s instruments that they are no longer using, please help us in our endeavor by sharing this information and clicking ‘Like!’ Thanks in advance for your generous support!
